Christian Beliefs

Twenty Basics Every Christian Should Know
      By: Wayne Grudem

As a Christian, it is hard to find good books to read and which are true to Scripture. For this reason, the elders of Community Bible Church recommend Wayne Grudem's concise systematic theology book, Christian Beliefs: Twenty Basics Every Christian should Know (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan, 2005). Summarized best by the publisher, “This readable guide to twenty basic Christian beliefs is a condensation of Wayne Grudem’s award-winning book on systematic theology. He and his son, Elliot, have boiled down the essentials of Christian theology for the average layperson and made them both clear and applicable to life. Each chapter includes questions for personal review or group discussion.”

Fool's Gold
Discerning Truth in an Age of Error
      By: John MacArthur General Editor

As the saying goes…all that glitters is not gold.

In our evangelical culture today, the battle for the mind has never been so great. The greatest victory for Satan these days is to convince man to accept what is false and reject what is true. For those who want discernment, Fool’s Gold will counter this by teaching the reader to recognize false doctrine and embrace what is truth.

It is getting more and more difficult to discern what is truth with so many different opinions expressed in the church. Never before in the history of the world have we had such a variety of choices of what to believe. If you want just a taste of all the choices, check out your local grocery store and count how many different kinds of cereal there are to choose from. Our society is obsessed with choices. In fact, people have learned to demand choices. Everyone is their own master and does what is right in their own eyes. Does this sound familiar?

Unfortunately, we have carried this attitude of demanding choices right in to the church (cf. Deut. 12:8; Judges 17:6). Never before has the church so desperately needed biblical discernment than today. In the church, people are demanding choices about preaching, church programs, worship, doctrine, Bibles, books, evangelism styles, political views, and fellowship. The fact that this book addresses all of these issues makes this an excellent resource for today’s discerning Christian. The contributors use the Bible as a guide to help you wind your way through many hot topics to distinguish truth from error.

Clearly stated, “This book will equip you with a foundation for biblical discernment that will enable you to make careful distinctions in your thinking about truth.”

No Other God
     A Response to Open Theism
      By: John M. Frame

This is an excellent resource for anyone who wants an understanding of the false teachings of open theism as well as a better understanding of the sovereignty of God. One chapter deals with the subject of the nature and will of God. This chapter may peak your interest in light of the recent natural disasters that have occured throughout the world.

In a nut shell, open theists have an overwhelming desire to attribute free-will to all areas of life (libertarian freedom). They also teach that God does not know the future and is therefore, not in direct control of all things. By doing so, they have taken God, who transcends time, and placed him within the constraints of His own creation. He now experiences new things along with the rest of His creation. Natural disasters are now a suprise to God as well as the everyday decisions that humans make. This, in the mind of open theists, removes God's responsibility for bad things that happen, when, in fact, all they have done is to create a god that is more like man. This also creates a god that we cannot trust since he does not know the future. The god of open theism changes his mind since he experiences new things. The result is that we cannot trust God's sovereignty nor can we trust Him to keep His word. For those who want a fuller understanding of God's will and sovereign control in our lives, I recommend this book.
